Yasuo Morioka, the bamboo craftsman
from the Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan.
Yasuo Morioka was inspired as a kid by the “design” of insects encountered through the seasons and started to express his art, using a local bamboo crafting technique.
Instead of using the usual green bamboo, he uses the one found on old thatched roof, tainted by ashes from fireplaces.
This bamboo type, that received fumes from the fireplaces of century old houses, developed a very distinctive amber tint, enhancing light and shade.
This valuable smoke-stained bamboo material is now used to create the entire CRIB collection, a range of beautiful, hand-made insect crafts.
